When they first began? When things like this first began? Around campfires they have born
And ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, in toga, and Indian sages on river rocks
They didn’t stop even in the Dark Ages, for they were sparkles by the wind borne
Till at last they sparked a sweeping Enlightenment, that continues through the ages
Some are so big they hug the Universe, and everything else beyond it, all Existence
What is the purpose of life in the scheme of things? From where comes this all?
Others are swept away by waves in the eternal seas of Time, nothing but an instance
What costs less at the supermarket? Where is the dining hall?
You might wonder how to go without them, for they sometimes feel like fetters
Needless chains, Hamletic labyrinths, useless stones to feet attached
Wouldn’t it be better to be to live free and mindless and without letters
Like birds following the currents when they come and go, by pure instinct guided?
Yet the very renouncing of them causes one of them to be posed, and we shouldn’t forget
Probing the infinity of the seas and the depths of the cosmos with ‘em, the great gift we get
